I’ve been an fan of Brene Brown since 2010 when I watched her in a Ted talk. My first thought of her, was how courageous she was to stand up on stage in-front of  millions of people and talk so confidently about her message (that connection is why we are here on earth!). Brene talks of courage and how being vulnerable is a strength. She defines courage by telling the whole of your story, with all your heart and imperfections. One of my personal weakest links was growing up with dyslexia and thinking I must be dumb, so at school I would over compensate and excel in sport and art to make up for what I perceived to be my short comings in an inability to read, write and comprehend what others seemed to do seamlessly in mere seconds. Living this way conditioned me to over compensate = Show no weakness.

Her work was at the end of some serious mentoring/counseling and “brain-gym” training which helped me to really feel great about what I have to work with. And if I need help, or I don’t know, and that’s ok! At that stage I was just heading off to the Commonwealth games in India for cycling… I think I watched that Ted talk a million times!!!!

So many of us were taught that vulnerability is a weakness and Brene does an amazing job at redirecting the focus to a mindset which creates power and freedom.

I have all her books and still reference them weekly.

Sometimes your greatest imperfections are the greatest gifts of all.
