As a yogi, raw food chef, author, and cafe manager, Olivia Scott is one busy woman! Olivia who is the founder of the stunning and ever-popular cafe The Raw Kitchen, began her passion for wellness by turning raw, plant based ingredients, into delicious and decadent treats. This has not only helped her establish a successful business, but it has also helped her thrive physically, mentally and spiritually.

The first in a regular segment that we will be doing on our blog, we are excited to have Olivia as our first Wholesome Hero. We discover how she incorporates techniques like meditation and yoga into her daily routine and how she uses a plant-based diet to stay energised and recharged.

Hi Olivia, tell us a little about what you do and what inspired you to embrace a healthy lifestyle?

I run a raw food business, The Raw Kitchen. I wanted to wake up and feel amazing everyday. I started to strip back all the things that weren’t serving me and began to focus on things that increased my energy and happiness. It was a combination of physical change – diet, exercise, environment, as well as mental change like changing my perspective on life, beginning to meditate, putting more energy into my outlook on life and relationships. These changes inspired me to help and teach others, and to continue exploring my passion for health and wellness.

What is your go-to breakfast?

My favourite smoothie combo – a handful of kale, a few almonds, maca powder, cacao powder, pea protein, greens powder, and a handful of ice. It’s usually following a yoga class or morning workout, so the protein and energy really helps to begin the recovery process.

What are your top 3 staples in your pantry?

Cauliflower – Honestly my favourite vegetable! I blend it into cauliflower rice and have it raw or roast it with spices and olive oil.

Raw cacao – I definitely have raw cacao most days in some shape or form. Whether I’m adding it to a smoothie, coffee, or even a hot chocolate in the evening with an almond milk base. I’m an addict – guilty as charged!

Turmeric – There’s something about it that feels so good. I add it to salad dressings, smoothies, roasted vegetables, warm it up with almond milk. Dried or fresh, I know it has such great health benefits I try to incorporate it into meals or snacks.

How do you maintain an overall sense of wellbeing when life gets stressful?

It sounds cliché but I practise yoga and meditation every day, which keeps me grounded. It’s pretty easy to fall out of balance with a lot going on (most people can relate to this) and I set aside time each day to ensure I have time with myself. In order to be the best person I can I need to ensure I am meeting my own needs first.

What does ‘wellbeing’ really mean to you?

Having a sense of happiness inside and out. Wellbeing starts in the mind, and filters out into everything we do and into all area of our lives. It means loving ourselves, what we do, who we are, and if we aren’t happy in these areas then we need to make a change. Wellbeing means feeling a sense of wellness in all areas – it isn’t just about food.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is just starting on his or her journey to wellness, what would it be?

Take it slow; one small change at a time goes a long way. Start off easy, slowly notice the benefits and figure out what works for you. Each individual is different, and it takes a while to understand your body and what it likes. Know that each small decision to make a healthy choice is an investment that you won’t regret.
